Google IP Indexing…
I have noticed this lately but don’t really know whats up – any ideas from the community… The example below is Dictionary.com being indexed by its IP.
So, to all 7 people who actually read this blog with any regularity, what do you think about it? Any SEO implications, or does it not really matter for search engine optimization.

Hey Russ, this is a little off topic, but I just wanted to let you know that you have way more than seven regular readers. Thanks to the “challenge comment” I left, I saw a huge spike in my stats. Keep up the great work and your blog will only continue to grow!
Looks like a bug, but I don’t really know why G would do this either…
I´ve seen all blog entries hoping to find something relative to that little sitemap that appear in some big sites, as dictionary.com. Google sometimes lists different sections of the site, that´s really interesting.
How may it be done?
Regards;
Eugenio.
Like Eugenio’s question, I’m curious to know whether anyone out there has an idea how to get a site’s sections listed on google like the example above, i.e.
Dictionary.com
– Translator
– Thesaurus
…
…
I have seen IP addresses on Google for a long time but only temporarily. It happens when someone links using the IP address. Dictionary.com is not showing this effect when checked with an inurl.
Update: site:66.161.12.81 shows thousands of IP address URL results.
I picked a relatively obscure word – define:ossify and dictionary.com or 66.161 etc don’t show up in the first 300 results, whereas dictionary.com used to pop up a lot when looking for definitions. Therefore it is an interesting question whether getting an IP address entry in G is as good as a penalty.
What would cause Google to show your IP rather than your domain name? Has anyone more information or possible causes?
The reason for indexing IP address is really simple. Someone makes link to the IP and G fallow this IP address based link.
It’s simple 🙂
Thanks Martin, I was sort of looking for the non obvious answer that would explain this. We have now found the answer to this behaviour and will post once proved.
when i submitted my website to google, i did not use the ip address of the webserver. i used the domain name, yet, when you google my site you will see the ip address. i have been searching for a solution for days now. i even posted several time to the correct group on google. still no answers.
Hmm as simple as that 🙂
