96.6% of Wikipedia Pages Rank in Google’s Top 10

While everyone has noticed Wikipedia dominating Google’s search results, this is a little outrageous. After grabbing 600 random pages from Wikipedia (using their special:random link), I conducted searches in Google for each of the titles of the Wikipedia entries. Out of the 600, 580 were in the top 10.

This is really scary. Throw in YouTube and then add 8 other sites of this caliber and the top 10 will be pretty predictable across the google SERPs.

Feel like check these in Yahoo?

    Hi,

the numbers are interesting but not that surprising. Some of the naming conventions of Wikipedia will make it highly unlikely that other sites have chosen the same title for it. therefor, adopting Wikipedia’s naming convention for these kind of searches will develop a strong bias in favour of finding Wikipedia pages in the top 10 or even top 5. One good example for this is “Attacks affecting Lebanese industry in the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict”.

The question that is more interesting to me is: How many real life search queries result in a search results page that contains wikipedia within the first 10 results.

Then, you don’t think that google is becoming less relevant ? Next time, go directly to wikipedia….

Like the previous commenter stated, the actual numbers are probably a bit lower.

Nevertheless, I /love/ that most things I search for will have an easily-clickable Wikipedia link. They tend to have the most authoritative information about most things, they aren’t commercial, and are the most relevant — why wouldn’t I want them to be in the top 10?

even with the searchmash UI which has the wikipedia pages on right by default, they STILL come up on the normal SERP.

Time towork on the algo google.

OR could it be why wikipedia’s search sucks so bad, so that everyone searches, “foo bar wiki” on google thus boosting wiki in the SERP, food for thought.

It’s only outrageous if the Wikipedia page beat out another page that was a better source of information.

No doubt Wikipedia has a lot of Google’s trust and a high PageRank so it’s really no surprise that many Wikipedia articles rank well.
When interpreting your results one should consider that you used the page titles, some of which are probably only used by Wikipedia as titles and are also part of the articles URLs.
So it would be interesting to see the results from another quality site, say the main page has a PageRank of 5, the domain is older than one year, and the site is well optimized for search engines. Choose some of the site’s articles and search for their titles. I think you will end up with a high percentage of top ten ranks as well.

The numbers are speaking the truth that Google is in favour of Wiki. This must be one big drawback on part of Google.

    I don’t see a problem here

wikipedia is an authoritative site with great content and incoming links.

The terms above are fairly randomand obscure with not much competition in the SERPs

I’m sure that most SEOs could get a page in the top 10 for most of the terms above as well.

A more meaningful study would target terms that are much more competitive (eg popular film titles, consumer goods, etc). In such a study I would not be surprised to see wikipedia in the SERPs – but that is the time to start asking questions

I don’t see how this is bad in any way. Most of the time, wikipedia does indeed have the best information you can get on a topic you search for, it has no ads on it, and it allows you to easily dig deeper into all the info, as the pages are so well interlinked.

I do, however, sense a slight hint of jealousy.

Wikipedia, Google Blog/Site, YouTube and Digg – these sites outrank everyone in the SERPS. If a keyword appears in any of these sites you can bet that they get the top ranks while the sites they link to or sites that have beter information are pushed to the back. I’ve seen cases where the top 8 results are from these sites like Google Blog is #1 because it made a passing remark about a keyword (2 sentences), YouTube is #2 because someone made a video about the Google blog sentences, and then a Digg article linking to the youtube video discussing the google blog setence..followed by 3-4 other comment pages from the Google Blog and the full comment page from youtube. All together something like 6 of the 10 SERP placeholds were kept within those 3 sites, the other 4 were the actual sites being discussed within the google blog, the video and the digg post.

By choosing random articles, it is likely-and seems to be the case-that most of the articles chosen will be about very trivial topics, about which there is probably very little other information available to begin with. Being in the top 10 out of 11 relevant pages is hardly an accomplishment.

    Jul 28, 2007

And your point? First, like many of the other commenters stated, your research method seems to be a little bit off – searching the string “Bahamas at the 1952 Summer Olympics” is going to bring Wikipedia up because THAT’S THE NAME OF THE ARTICLE! Also, the way they name their pages, it becomes part of the URL. So maybe 2% of people actually would put something like that into Google, the rest of us would actually search something like Bahamian Olympic Team, or Summer Olympics 1952, Bahamas. Are you trying to imply that some darker force is at work here? You make these claims, but then don’t follow up with anything else? So again, my question to you is “What’s your point?”

I ran these 600 titles against Yahoo’s API, and 92% of them were within the first 10 results, and on the second place at average.

  15. Russ, I discovered your post thru Search Engine Journal and I have to say it is very impressive. For the french keywords it is exactlty the same problem (the dominance of Wikipedia in search results). I guess it is the same in many other languages ! 🙁

    Congratulations for the post.

Putting so much weight on a single site is more detrimental than beneficial to the user. I think that Wiki got so popular that Google can hide it from serps without harming the site in any way. Who doesn’t know about Wiki after all?
